Delay & Closing Info

Each day of inclement weather is unique, and we carefully consider the condition of roads, the location of the storm, and precipitation and temperature predictions before closing or delaying school.

We will announce a school cancellation or delay the evening before if it’s possible or in the morning by 6 a.m. ParentSquare allows us to contact our school community within minutes, and families will be notified with the same message by phone, text and email. The message then remains available in ParentSquare under “Alerts.”

 Area TV and radio stations will also be notified of a school closing or delay, or you can check Centerville Schools’ website or social media pages.

We have five calamity days built into our district calendar, so if schools are closed for five days or less, students would not be required to log into remote classrooms. If we surpass five calamity days, we will re-evaluate the need for remote learning days and communicate any updates.

On days when Centerville City Schools are closed for inclement weather, there will be no transportation service to public or private/parochial schools.

After-school athletics and/or extracurricular activities will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Please watch for information from your child’s coach or adviser.

Depending on the weather, we may consider using a 2-hour delay as an alternative to closing.

The pick-up times for most bus riders will be scheduled two hours later than the normal schedule. This includes public school students in grades PreK-12 and all private/parochial school students. (EXCEPTION: Pick-up for PM preschool and kindergarten students, as well as students participating in the afternoon session at SOP, would be delayed by one hour.)

The delayed start times for schools will be:

• AM preschool & kindergarten -- 10:10-11:50 a.m.*
• PM preschool & kindergarten -- 12:55-2:35 p.m.**
• 1st grade -- 10:10 a.m.
• Elementary schools (2-5) -- 10:00 a.m.
• Middle schools (6-8) -- 10:50 a.m.
• Centerville High School -- 9:50 a.m.
• School of Possibilities -- 10:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. & 1:45-3:45 p.m.

*Dismissal time will be 11:50 for AM preschool & AM kindergarten
**Start of PM preschool and PM kindergarten will be delayed 1 hour

If schools are operating on a 2-hour delay, afternoon and evening activities will be held as scheduled unless you are notified otherwise by a coach or adviser.

Centerville City Schools will not dismiss early due to inclement weather. Notification of early dismissal is very difficult, and we do not want to send students to any unattended or locked homes. If weather conditions are a concern, you have the option of picking up your child by calling the school office and notifying office personnel of your intent. Parents/guardians must call their child’s school or send a message through ParentSquare before students can be released to family friends or neighbors.

In addition to inclement weather, individual school schedules could be affected by a variety of other circumstances. These include power failures, water main breaks, the severe outbreak of illness resulting in high absences of students or staff, etc. ParentSquare will be used to communicate any individual school schedule changes that may be a result of such an event.

Please have a plan in place that provides appropriate supervision of your child in the event school is canceled or delayed. While school is very important and every day of instruction is valued, the overall safety of our students always comes first.
