Substitute Positions
Centerville Schools need many substitutes throughout the school year. Positions include substitute teachers, paraprofessionals, secretaries and office aides, bus drivers and aides, custodians, and kitchen workers.
Becoming a substitute gives you a chance to learn more about Centerville Schools, and in many cases, could lead to a full-time position within the district.

Am I eligible to become a substitute teacher?
Yes, if you are at least 21 years of age and hold a bachelor's degree OR meet our expanded substitute teacher eligibility requirements below, which include individuals who do not hold a post-secondary degree.

Successful completion of a required district training session with the Director of Human Resources
- Individuals 21 years of age enrolled in a college or university who are in good standing with that institution
- Individuals 21 years of age with a high school diploma and two professional references
- Individuals who are currently and successfully completing their student teaching practicum with Centerville Schools (these individuals will be exempt from the training requirement above)
- Individuals who previously and successfully completed their student teaching practicum with Centerville Schools (these individuals will be exempt from the training requirement above)
- Individuals who are currently employed or volunteering in the district who the Director of Human Resources deems qualified (these individuals will be exempt from the training requirement above)

What hours do substitute teachers work?
Substitute teachers work during school hours. These hours vary by level:
- Preschool & K-1 Buildings: 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. (PM session reports at 11:15 a.m.)
- Grades 2-5: 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
- Grades 6-8: 8:15 a.m.-3:45 p.m.
- Grades 9-12: 7:35 a.m.-3:05 p.m.

What are the steps to become a substitute teacher?
Please follow these steps to ensure you have met all the requirements to work as a substitute teacher in Centerville Schools.
STEP 1: Complete the online application at the Dayton Area School Employment Consortium.
- Go to https://www.applitrack.com/dayton/onlineapp
- Select "Locations" from the left side of the screen, then "Centerville City Schools."
- Scroll to "Substitute Teacher" and click the red box "Apply." A new window will open.
- Follow the onscreen instructions and complete all fields marked with the red asterisks.
STEP 2: Use the form below to register for a Substitute Teacher training session.

These classes are REQUIRED and are offered on specific dates throughout the school year. Please register in advance to reserve your spot!

All classes are 8 a.m. - noon.
- The location will be in the Central Office Conference Room, 111 Virginia Ave., Centerville, OH 45458. Park in the lot on the west side of Cline Elementary, where the entrance to the Board of Education Office is located.

STEP 3: Attend the Substitute Teacher training session that you registered for. Following the session, you will receive a new hire packet with the following forms to complete:
- I-9 form (see STEP 5 below for required documents)
- STRS enrollment form (also SERS enrollment if also working as a classified employee*)
- Payroll withholding tax forms for federal, state, and city
- Direct deposit form
- Note: A substitute teacher may choose to also sub as an aide. No additional licenses/permits are required, other than a valid Ohio teaching certificate/license or substitute teaching license and SERS enrollment.
STEP 4: You must have a valid Ohio teaching certificate/license or apply for a Substitute Teaching license from the Ohio Department of Education.
- You will need an OH|ID account. Click here to view instructions on how to create a new account with the Ohio Department of Education.
- If you have a bachelor's degree and you are applying for 1 Year or 5 Year Substitute Teaching License, please click here for instructions on how to apply for a license. The cost is $25 for a one-year license and $125 for a five-year license.
- If you are applying for a Non-Bachelor's Substitute License under the provisions of Ohio Senate Bill 1 (see eligibility requirements above), click here for instructions on how to apply for the temporary license. The cost is $25 for a one-year license.
- Note: The application is only active for 60 days.
STEP 5: After the training class, there is a sign-up sheet to schedule an appointment time to finalize employment and payroll paperwork. Fingerprinting (if needed) will be done at this appointment. Please bring the following items with you to this appointment:
- Official college transcripts showing your bachelor’s degree, if applicable (Note: Centerville Schools will keep your official transcripts.)
- Please note: If your college/university only provides electronic transcripts, they have to be emailed directly to paige.aydelott@centerville.k12.oh.us. If you are applying for a Substitute Teaching License, e-scripts have to be sent directly to ODE. Information on how to upload them is included in ODE's instructions.
- Completed forms you received at the training session
- Your driver’s license and one of the following IDs (birth certificate, social security card, or passport)
- Cash (exact amount), check, or money order for $48 made out to Centerville Schools for fingerprinting ($22 for BCI plus $26 for FBI).
- We will accept copies of the BCl/FBI reports if they were done within one year.
- Your appointment will last approximately 20 minutes and will be held at the Board of Education Office, 111 Virginia Ave., Centerville, OH 45458.

Am I eligible to become a substitute aide?
How much are substitute aides paid?
Substitute aides in Centerville are paid $90 per day.
During the 2024-25 school year, a $100 bonus will be paid to substitute aides, paraprofessionals and secretaries who work 10 full days in a month, $200 for 15 full days, and $300 for 20 full days. The bonuses are in addition to the regular pay for substitute aides.
What hours do substitute aides work?
Substitute aides work during school hours. These hours vary by level:

Yes, if you are at least 21 years of age and pass a background check, you may apply to become a substitute bus driver or aide. Those who are interested in driving must have a clean driving record. Please call Andy Trick at 937-885-7776 with any questions.
