Elks Back to School Update - June 18, 2020 Although we typically take a break from our weekly e-newsletter over the summer, we anticipate having a lot of information to share with our school community in the coming weeks. We plan on sending an email each Thursday to share any new updates as we prepare for next school year.
There are many uncertainties as school districts plan for the 2020-21 school year, and we want to assure our families we are working hard this summer to prepare for a variety of learning scenarios as well as reviewing our safety protocols.
In fact, planning for the 2020-21 school year began before this past school year ended, thanks to the thousands of parents, students and teachers who took the time to complete surveys. We are using that input as our Curriculum Department works with both administrators and teacher advisory teams on three possible scenarios -- remote learning, a blended remote and face-to-face scenario, or a return to traditional classrooms.
The best case scenario is to have all of our students back in school as often as possible. However, we are still awaiting requirements and guidance from the Ohio Department of Health, the Ohio Department of Education and Dayton and Montgomery County Public Health. We also anticipate there will be some families who want their children to continue learning at home, so we are exploring a fully remote learning option and will share more information as decisions are made.
Some important factors in our decision making will be guidelines regarding facial coverings, social distancing -- both on our school buses and in our classrooms, and sanitizing requirements.
Please know that we will be working diligently over the summer so we will be ready to offer the high quality of education our community expects as the 2020-21 school year begins. We will continue to keep families updated as details are available. More News from Centerville Schools Summer learning for students in grades K-5 Looking for ways to engage your child in learning over the summer? The summer months are an opportunity for your child to explore, learn and enjoy being a kid, but families often ask how they can help their child maintain or reinforce skills learned during the school year. To support families with summer learning ideas, our curriculum team has created weekly choice boards and a website with possibilities to support your child. Each week we will post a new menu of options for each grade, kindergarten through fifth grade.
District plans staffing changes for 2020-21 Each summer, our administrative team takes a careful look at enrollment and staffing for the upcoming school year. In addition, we have been reviewing budget reductions by the state of Ohio and the impact on our district as we plan for next school year and beyond. Over the past few weeks, we have been working through a process to reduce staffing where possible while maintaining reasonable class sizes and keeping programs in Advanced Placement, Career Education, foreign language, the arts and more. We will be sending out additional information following next week's Board of Education meeting, and we will continue to review enrollment and staffing needs as well as budget projections throughout the summer.
