End of Year Reminder for Seniors
Class of 2020 Students and Parents,
We have been working with senior class officers, high school staff, our district leadership team and even bringing in community partners as we find ways to celebrate the Class of 2020.
Here are some end-of-the-year reminders as well as details about activities CHS has planned to recognize more than 700 seniors in this year's graduating class.
SCHOLAR ATHLETE CEREMONY – SUNDAY, MAY 17 The Athletic Department is recognizing all seniors and juniors who have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher and have earned a varsity letter this school year. First year award winners will receive a medal, and second year winners will receive a plaque. A virtual Scholar Athlete Ceremony is being held on May 17 to recognize scholar athletes who were chosen to receive one of the additional Special Awards. Those award winners were sent a link to the virtual ceremony. Awards will be sent home with other student materials on May 21 for seniors and May 26-28 for juniors. A commemorative Scholar Athlete program can be downloaded from the Centerville Athletics website.
BLUE RIBBON ASSEMBLY Although the Blue Ribbon Assembly is cancelled, the CHS Guidance Department is reaching out to students who would have been recognized during the event. Students who are being honored will be mailed a commemorative program and award certificate.
SENIOR MATERIALS DROP OFF/PICK UP – THURSDAY, MAY 21 Seniors can return school materials and pick up any belongings or awards from 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on May 21. Please see the previous email that was sent or click here to view the schedule.
ART, PERFORMING ARTS, ATHLETICS AND SPECIAL PROGRAMS- Teachers will be in contact with students to arrange for pickup of materials from these activities/courses.
LIBRARY BOOK RETURNS – Library checkout notices have been emailed home. We understand that some library books may be in student lockers and those will be checked in and taken care of during locker cleanouts. The notices are just a tool to inform families of the items that students have checked out in general. Please return any library books that you have in your possession during the May drop-off and pickup dates, but do not worry about books that may be in a classroom or a locker, as they will be taken care of. No fines or fees are being assessed for library books at this time. If you have any library related questions you can email the librarian at Christie.Sanderman@centerville.k12.oh.us.
POST HIGH SCHOOL PLANS AND TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS– DUE BY MONDAY, MAY 25 The CHS Guidance Department is asking all seniors to complete this Google Form to share their post high school plans. This form will also help counselors know where to send transcripts after the school year ends.
SENIORS' LAST DAY – WEDNESDAY, MAY 20 The CHS staff has a plan for the Class of 2020 and teachers to be able to say a virtual goodbye on the seniors' scheduled last day of school, May 20. Details will be shared with students through their Google Classrooms.
SENIOR DRIVE OUT PARADE– SATURDAY, MAY 30 With the help of the Centerville Schools Transportation Department, Centerville Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff's Department, Washington Township Fire Department and Bill's Donuts, students in the Class of 2020 will be able to participate in a graduation parade at 1:30 p.m. on May 30. Students must remain in their own vehicle and can begin lining up their cars at 1 p.m. at CHS. Family members may ride with their senior, and students are encouraged to safely decorate their vehicles. Senior advisors and CHS administrators will be on hand to wave students on as they leave the parking lot.
The parade will turn left (west) out of the CHS parking lot onto Franklin Street, then right (north) on Main Street, right (east) on Alex-Bell Road, right (south) on Clyo Road to Spring Valley Road where it would conclude. The sheriff's office and the police department will escort the group and temporarily close intersections to keep the parade moving continuously. Any community members who plan to watch and applaud as students drive by are asked to maintain appropriate social distance from others.
VIRTUAL COMMENCEMENT – MONDAY, JUNE 1 CHS has partnered with Herff Jones – in collaboration with graduation technology partners StageClip and MarchingOrder – to host a virtual commencement for the Class of 2020 at 7 p.m. on June 1. The event, which will include pre-recorded speeches, performances and a personalized slide for each graduate, will be available through a link on the district's website. The link to the virtual commencement will be valid for one year, and CHS also will receive a digital copy of the ceremony to make available to families for download. Students will receive a commemorative graduation program, which will be delivered with their diploma.
In support of the Class of 2020, Centerville-Washington Township community members are invited to turn their outdoor lights on beginning at 7 p.m. on June 1 to "shine a light" on the seniors' accomplishments.
DIPLOMA PRESENTATIONS – MAY 29-JUNE 3 Students at CHS have the same adviser for all four years of high school, and it has been a long tradition that advisers hand diplomas to their advisees during the graduation ceremony. This year, advisers – with the help of other CHS staff members – will hand deliver diplomas to their students' homes between Friday, May 29 and Wednesday, June 3. This date range provides flexibility for advisers to contact families and arrange a date and time that works for everyone's schedules. Seniors are encouraged to wear their caps and gowns so family members can take a photo of the diploma presentation. (Note: If you are unable to coordinate a date and time, please contact the CHS office at 937-439-3500, Ext. 0 or 1, to make arrangements to pick up your diploma after June 3.)
I look forward to celebrating the Class of 2020 over the coming weeks!
