KINDNESS INITIATIVE:
Parents –
As a supplement to our building wide effort to increase our student's awareness of, and increasing their practice of kindness towards others in our John Hole Community, our Student Council is instituting a hands on "Acknowledging Kindness" Acts of Kindness Club!
All of our students have already met as classroom groups with Mrs. Mays and Miss Niekamp to discuss ways and places that they can show kindness to others (including the bus, playground, cafeteria and hallway, in addition to the classroom). Through these discussions, many different ways of showing kindness were brought to student's attention, possibly with ideas that they may have not thought of (i.e. practicing patience, smiling at someone, etc).
The student council, made up of 3rd – 5th graders from each room, and led by student advisors Mrs. Luong and Mrs. Randolph, are taking it one step further and instituting this Kindness Club, basing it on information we received from JH grandparent, who was moved to join this cause after reading about it in a Florida newspaper. Simply put, it is making a concerted effort to look for opportunities to share kindness with others, in the expectation that the kindness shared will become kindness spreading throughout a community. In our case, not just John Hole, but our homes as well.
To begin, our student council representatives will be handing out kindness cards to anyone they see performing an act of kindness; they are sharpening their skills so they can spot it throughout our school day!! The card the will hand out acknowledges that the recipient was spotted showed kindness towards another. This card will then prompt the person who received to in turn and look for someone else doing a kindness… so that they can pass it on!
Our student council representatives will be explaining this to their classrooms. Because 2nd grade students are not represented on student council, each 2nd grade room has been assigned a fifth grade representative to visit and tell them about it.
At home, we hope you will ask your students about the kindness program, and if your student produces a card, talk to them about opportunities to look around for someone to receive that card from them. Our desire is to reinforce the culture of kindness in our building so much, that it flows outward into our communities; to such an extent that those outside of the JH building will take notice, and hopefully, begin to emulate our students.
If you have any questions about our kindness initiatives, please contact the school office at 434-0725.
Thank you!
Destination Imagination News:
We Need Your (Gently Used) Shoes!
Centerville Destination Imagination is leading a District-wide shoe collection fundraising campaign and will be collecting gently used shoes at each school from November 11-November 22. Working with Funds2Orgs.com, Destination Imagination students are asking families to help us as we attempt to collect at least 2500 pairs of gently worn shoes. We will accept any type - kids and adult, men's and women's, dressy and casual, flip flops, sandals, boots, sports cleats - as long as they are GENTLY used. All shoes donated will be sent to developing countries for micro-entrepeneurs to sell to their customers for far less money. There will be a labeled drop-off bin located in your school near the office. Please consider donating your family's gently used footwear to this worthy cause. You may send the shoes to school with your child or, for larger amounts of shoes, parents may bring them in themselves and place them in the container marked for the shoe drive. Centerville Destination Imagination appreciates the Centerville community's support of our fundraiser.
