GIRLS SOCCER: Varsity Game – 8/21/2019: Last night at Alumni Field Girls Varsity Soccer defeated the Northmont Thunderbolts 2-0, moving their record to 2-1 on the season and giving Allison Colopy her first of many shutouts. The Lady Elks played with relentless pressure from the start, forcing Northmont back on their heels all evening. The first goal of the game was scored by senior Emma Stanley on a put back as she slid into the goal with the ball to put Centerville on the board 1-0. The second goal was scored by senior Chloe Spitler with an assist from sophomore Jenna Hallbeck making it 2-0. Northmont's goalie made several saves to keep the score 2-0, and the Lady Elks defense was stifling, frustrating the Thunderbolts all night long. The game would end 2-0 under the lights on a beautiful evening. The lady Elks will be in action again Saturday night as they travel to play Cincinnati Anderson at 7 pm. Special thanks to all the fans who showed up to support, especially the HERD who cheered the Lady Elks on the entire game.
CHS Girls Soccer – JVA Game – 8/21/2019: Battled the Northmont Thunderbolts on a sunny 90 degree afternoon at Alumni Stadium. In the 7th minute the Bolts were awarded a free kick and deflected it past the Elks to take a 1-0 lead. The Elks quickly answered when Sophie Schluter slotted a pass to Sydney Heckman and her controlled finish inside the eighteen yard box tied the game 1-1. The 22nd minute brought us stellar combination play between Alyssa Kester and Maddie Brandt as they drove the ball down the home sideline. Kester finished the play using skilled footwork in the goal box beating the keeper low to the left, Brandt's hard work earned the assist. Elks lead 2-1. With 9 minutes remaining in the first half Merritt Weltge played a crossing ball to mid field where a streaking Anna Weller outran the defender and calmly beat the Bolts keeper from just inside the eighteen yard box. The 3-1 halftime score held as Elks mid fielders Abby Loree, Abby Burr and Mckinna Moore closed down all second half Bolt attacks. Lady Elks JVA improve to a 3-0-0 record and are next in action at Anderson high school on Saturday Aug. 24th at 5pm.
CHS Girls Soccer – JVB Game – 8/21/2019: The Girls JVB Soccer team kicked off their season Wednesday night in Springboro against the Panthers. Although the final score favored the home team, 0-3, the game was closer than the scoreboard. The first half was played largely between the 18s and featured plenty of strong ball movement. The Panthers opened the scoring in the first 10 minutes by pulling Elk Goalkeeper Mia Meza-Cuadra out of the box and striking from distance. A handling call on the Elks led to a 2nd chance rebound score for the Panther's second goal. The second half felt strangely familiar, as the Panthers again found the back of the net with a long shot in the early minutes of the half. The best scoring opportunity for the Elks came with 8 minutes left in the game. It featured fancy footwork by the midfielder Alexia Peterson, a great first touch by right wing Kayla Woolf, and a curving shot by Mia Meza-Cuadra (yes, Mia, the 'Keeper!). Unfortunately, the possession also featured a diving save by the 'Boro Goalkeeper. Great hustle and effort by the Centerville team. They might have been down, but they were never out. The Young Elks are already talking revenge when Springboro comes to Alumni Stadium on September 9th. In the meantime, the JVB team travels to Cincinnati Saturday, August 24th, to take on the Anderson Redskin at 3:00 p.m. followed by JVA and Varsity. Come support your Lady Elks Soccer Teams!
BOYS SOCCER: Last night, Boys Soccer JVB had their season opener in a hotly contested rivalry against the Springboro Panthers. After shutting out Boro in a pre-season scrimmage 4-0, Boro was ready for revenge. The Panthers scored early only to be answerd by an unassisted goal by Micah Gruenberg to bring the score to 1-1 at the half. Boro came out fighting and scored in the second half, but the Elks found the net with a goal by Myles Kirksey, assisted by Micah Gruenberg. Final score 2-2. The Elks get one more opportunity against Boro this season. SATURDAY, all three Boys Soccer teams travel to Walnut Hills for an afternoon triple-header against the Eagles. JVB starts the day at 12:00 p.m., followed by JVA at 2:00 p.m., and capped by Varsity at 4:00 p.m. The games will be held at Marx Stadium (the larger of the two fields), located at 3300 Sulsar Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45207.
