'We are Centerville' art exhibit

The Centerville Arts Commission is featuring artwork from Centerville students in its February Art Gallery exhibit! Originally part of the "We are Centerville" event held last fall, the art contest encouraged students to include the people, places and events that highlight Centerville. Several pieces from that show will be on display at the Centerville Police Department until Feb. 28. The Centerville Arts Commission will host a free reception from 6:30-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19 in the gallery to introduce the collection to the community. Immigrant families will serve their native teas and coffees, and a Rondalla Band will play live music.

Band invited to Essentially Ellington Festival

Centerville's top two jazz ensembles will perform at the Essentially Ellington Festival held at the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music (CCM) on Saturday, Feb. 23. This event is part of a series of regional festivals sponsored by the Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. These are non-competitive, education-focused festivals designed to offer high school jazz bands of all levels the opportunity to perform the music of jazz legend Duke Ellington and other seminal big band composers and arrangers at various locations across the country. Each band will perform for a panel of evaluators and then will receive a clinic after their performance. Students will get a chance to attend master classes on their specific instrument, and will be in attendance for the Gala Concert that night featuring the CCM Jazz Orchestra.

The Centerville Band program has several other events planned for this month:

  • The Jazz Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19 in the CHS Central Theatre. Admission is free!
  • Centerville Youth Winds, Middle School Percussion and Centerville Youth Orchestra will perform at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20 in the Performing Arts Center.
  • The Concert Band will participate in the Bellbrook Band Festival at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21 at Bellbrook High School.
  • The Band Preview Concert, featuring all Concert Bands, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27 in the Performing Arts Center.
