Throughout the year, we'll be introducing some of the great teachers, administrators, staff members, students and volunteers in our district. Today, let's get to know ... CHRISTIE SANDERMAN, District Secondary School Librarian!

Tell us about your job.
I am the Secondary District Librarian. There are two certified librarians in the district, Emily Seppa and myself, and I oversee all the middle and high buildings. I typically spend around two days at the high school and travel to the other three buildings throughout the week, assisting the library aides and teaching classes. Some of my main responsibilities include teaching research skills and strategies, demonstrating the use of our eBooks, databases and online resources to both students and teachers, and ordering and cataloging all the library materials and resources for my four buildings.

What are some of your goals this year?
This year I focused on building a makerspace program at the high school that meets every other Monday in room 203 of the CHS library. I have enjoyed all the fun research I've gotten to do in finding activities and tech for the kids to use, and I hope to continue to generate interest in this club in the years to come.

Tell us about your family.
I am married with two young daughters, Lilly (6) and Ava (2). My husband and I live in Bellbrook, and we really enjoy camping and spending time outdoors.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Old North Dayton and attended high school at Chaminade Julienne in downtown Dayton.

Tell us something interesting about yourself.
Going to concerts is my most favorite pastime (especially outdoor venues). I've zip-lined through a rainforest in the mountains of St. Lucia.

What is your favorite book, movie, TV show or hobby?
There are so many books that I treasure but I always go back to the first book that I read over and over as a child: "Where the Red Fern Grows" by Wilson Rawls. I read my paperback copy so many times that the pages fell out and I had to use a rubber band to hold it together. My husband and I love "The Walking Dead" and "Game of Thrones" if we are crazy enough to stay up for an hour after the kids go to bed.

What do you think you'd be doing if you weren't in education?
I always wanted to be a writer when I was growing up and pictured myself writing novels or working for a newspaper/magazine in some way.

What is the best part about working for Centerville Schools?
The best part for me has been how great our students are and getting to see the excitement on their faces when they tell me about a book or author that they love to read. I've had lots of fun doing book speed dating activities with students this year and working on digital booktalks for the middle school kids.
