Read More DRISCOLL, NORMANDY AND STINGLEY ASSIST LEUKEMIA RESEARCHWednesday, April 11, 2012Stingley’s Alpha Club members are counting pennies and other coins that came in during their three-week “Pennies for Patients” fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Donations from three elementary schools, Driscoll, Normandy, and Stingley, totaled over $8,500 and will be added to donations from 25,000 other schools around the country who also participated in the fundraiser. The donations will help fund 480 researchers in 15 countries, on five continents, specifically targeting leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Read More DAYTON PHILHARMONIC MUSICIANS VISIT NORMANYMonday, March 26, 2012Recently the Normandy PTO treated their 4th graders to a visit by five musicians from the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. The students heard demonstrations of the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and French horn, learned the history of each instrument, and how each instrument creates its sound. They even got a little help from CHS drama class students who helped in the making of the props and the set. Read More NORMANDY COMBINES ART AND SCIENCE WITH THEIR SILKWORM PROJECTWednesday, March 7, 2012Several Normandy 3rd graders are assisting Art teacher Alice Tavani in the daily routine of maintaining the living quarters of their silkworms, just a small fraction of the 250 silkworms that are now living in 3rd grade classrooms. Third graders in every classroom add fresh food (ground-up mulberry leaves) to the silkworm containers, making sure it is clean and that it also contains a cardboard tube when the silkworms are ready to form their cocoons. The project is the result of an Ohio Art Education Foundation grant to Tavani, a National Board Certified Teacher. Tavani explains the third graders are learning about life cycles through raising the silkworms from the egg until they become adult moths and lay more eggs. The silk will be harvested from the cocoons and incorporated into the felting process along with the wool. The first group of silk worms is starting to form cocoons, with the first threads of silk coming in several weeks.
