NORMANDY COMBINES ART AND SCIENCE WITH THEIR SILKWORM PROJECT

NORMANDY COMBINES ART AND SCIENCE WITH THEIR SILKWORM PROJECT

Several Normandy 3rd graders are assisting Art teacher Alice Tavani in the daily routine of maintaining the living quarters of their silkworms, just a small fraction of the 250 silkworms that are now living in 3rd grade classrooms. Third graders in every classroom add fresh food (ground-up mulberry leaves) to the silkworm containers, making sure it is clean and that it also contains a cardboard tube when the silkworms are ready to form their cocoons. The project is the result of an Ohio Art Education Foundation grant to Tavani, a National Board Certified Teacher. Tavani explains the third graders are learning about life cycles through raising the silkworms from the egg until they become adult moths and lay more eggs. The silk will be harvested from the cocoons and incorporated into the felting process along with the wool. The first group of silk worms is starting to form cocoons, with the first threads of silk coming in several weeks. Read More
