WELLER STUDENTS RAISE $4696 FOR AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION February 25
Weller Physical Education teacher Jim Spears reports “the 2014 Jump Rope for the Heart event at Weller involved more students than last year (134) but raised slightly less money for the American Heart Association. Twelve students each raised more than $100 with Riley Weeks, Anna Kauffman, and Caleb Kauffman the top three fundraisers for the annual event whose focus is helping in the effort to fight heart disease. WELLER STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN RECYCLED SCULPTURE CONTEST April 30
Weller Art teacher Nicole Wentz annually encourages her students to participate in the Montgomery County Recycled Sculpture Contest where their entries are judged on the number of recyclable materials used, the percent of sculpture made of recyclable materials, originality, a “wow factor,” and the complexity of the sculpture. Three Weller sculptures are being sent to the county contest in May at the Montgomery County Fair Grounds. How about these samples of student creativity! Read More

Weller 4th graders are learning from their teachers but also their peers as they participate in science experiments that examine chemical changes in matter. Everybody Counts, a national non-profit agency dedicated to the empowerment and independence of people with disabilities, partners with schools so students can experience how individuals with disabilities cope with everyday challenges. Weller 4th graders felt genuine frustration trying to eat cheerios, write their name, or use scissors after having fingers on their dominant hand taped as Weller PTO volunteers, using the Everybody Counts curriculum, answered their questions and provided support. WELLER VOYAGER STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT GERMAN CARNIVAL TRADITIONS January 24
Four Centerville teachers of German recently brought German Fasching (Carnival) festivities to dozens of Weller students in the Voyager after-school program. The Voyager students enjoyed making their own Karneval masks; dancing the Chicken Dance and the Monkey Dance; and participating in the Weiberfastnacht (Women’s Carnival) tradition of cutting off men’s neckties. They also were taught the German language, including the Alphabet, counting to 10, introducing themselves to others and saying their age. Read More

Weller volunteers made the hands-on extension activities from COSI on Wheels possible during their two-day visit to Weller. The COSI theme was “The Incredible Human Machine” that included extension activities like “Create a Food Diary,” “In Proportion,” and “Runnin’ on Empty.” Read More

VISITING GLASS ARTIST WOWS WELLER STUDENTS October 25
Weller Elementary students were both informed and entertained by Visiting Artist Karen Willenbrink Johnsen, a resident of Bow, Washington, who has been working with glass for more than 30 years. Her work reflects the power of nature that inspires, revitalizes, and awes this artist who teaches glass-sculpting classes throughout the world with her husband and collaborator Jasen Johnsen. Karen worked two decades at the Pilchuck Glass School, and has worked with renowned international glass artist Dale Chihuly. The Johnsen website is www.willenbrinkjohnsen.com. Read More

WELLER’S “READ & EAT” A HUGE SUCCESS March 7
Weller students and their parents shared a unique opportunity – reading together at school! The brainchild of Weller’s Literacy Support Teacher Kelly Gartz, parents were invited to bring a lunch to school, eat in their child’s classroom, and share a book and a game that guided their literacy discussion about the book. Here 3rd grader Mark Balonier is enthralled with the book his mom Dawn is reading. The turnout of parents was impressive and a wonderful testament to the support our students have at home. Read More

WELLER STUDENTS LEARN FROM CENTER OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY (COSI) TRAVELING PROGRAM December 4
“The Incredible Human Machine,” a COSI on wheels project that visited Weller Elementary, is designed to enhance the ability of students to make decisions that will improve their long term well-being. The program consisted of a 45 minute interactive assembly followed by hands-on activities that engaged the students and encouraged the development of Science Process Skills. Students learned about the digestive, nervous, and circulatory systems, plus how nutrients and exercise keeps a body healthy. Read More

The Student Council at Weller has planted some new seedling plants in the land lab. They planted broccoli, kale, carrots, garlic and beets among many other items. Each grade level was responsible for a specific groups of plants. They researched their plant and shared the information with the class along with the task of planting the seedlings. Read More
