Centerville eighth grader named ‘Hero of Character’

Hannah Matthews, an eighth grader at Watts Middle School in Centerville, was recently chosen by the Character Council of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky for the “Heroes of Character” Award.

“Hannah’s greatest gift is respect for herself and for others,” said Jeanette Marshall, an English-Language Arts teacher at Watts who nominated Matthews for the award. “I don’t think she is even aware of the great impact she has on her peers.”

The Character Council of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky chose Matthews as one of five students and five adult leaders who demonstrate outstanding character both inside and outside the classroom. The recipients will be honored during the “Heroes of Character” Annual Celebration Dinner on March 15 at the Courtyard by Marriott in Hamilton, Ohio. For more information about the Character Council, visit http://charactercincinnati.org.

Matthews participates in girls’ ensemble, choir and lunch buddies. She also serves as a student helper in the Watts Writing Lab and has participated with the Centerville Coed Dance Team for nine years, holding several leadership roles such as co-captain of the primary team, co-captain and captain of the elementary team (fifth and sixth grade), and co-captain of the junior team.

According to Matthews, it’s the little things that can brighten someone’s day.

“I try to do things like help someone get to class or offer to help with their books because those small things can make a difference,” she said. “I’m also thankful for Mrs. Marshall, my teachers, my family and friends because they’ve really impacted me and helped me become a better person.”

Hadley E. Watts Middle School, located at 7056 McEwen Road, serves more than 680 students in sixth through eighth grade.

Centerville City Schools serve more than 8,100 students in Centerville and Washington Township in southwest Ohio, offering a variety of educational programs to a diverse student population. The district operates 13 school buildings, as well as two preschools and a bus facility accommodating and servicing more than 100 buses. Visit www.centerville.k12.oh.us for more information.
