In Attendance:
• Presenting proposed project for Eagle Rank: Deck in Grant Nature Outdoor Classroom. • Mr. Miller proposed we donate the $250, Kevin Ehring proposed we match John Hole’s donation of $300. Motion passed unanimously.
Principal’s Report • Presented 2012-2013 Calendar. School Schedule changed to begin August 15 and go through May 29. • PTO meetings will begin at 7:30pm next year • ListServ still main source of communication • Achievement tests coming up in 2 weeks, April 24, April 26 and May 1 • Honor Roll Award will be voted on at the May 15th PTO meeting. Executive Committee will also award Wish List • Friday June 1st -- Jazz on the Lawn (Angel Stanifer) • June 5th 8th grade awards, Honor Roll Award, Student artwork recognized • Watts PTO Recipient will be chosen in May, presented at the 8th grade awards • June 5th afternoon is Spring Fling • June 6th King’s Island trip for 8th graders • Resource Officer Deputy Fulweiler and Mr. Miller have come up with the Watts Middle School Poster Contest focusing on Bullying “Silence is not the Answer”. Asking PTO to support the cause with monetary prizes. Motion carried. • Schools will be graded using a letter grade system. Simulated the data to see where they would measure up, and Watts came out to be a “B”. Measuring will happen throughout the year as opposed to once a year. • K. Ehring asked if No Child Left Behind Waiver has been approved, Mr. Miller is unsure. • Ohio has moved up into 10th in the nation in education. Curriculum Committee • No Child Left Behind enacted in 2001 • Ohio filing waiver to not have to adhere to strict graduation rates. • OGT will be replaced with a different format, test will be online • Plan is to have the waiver proposal in place in 2014 • All courses will have to have end-of-course assessment (not just core classes) • Assessments will help track teacher performance • New Standards, New Assessments, New Reporting -- Centerville will most likely get less federal money based on our standing • Math In Focus is the the new curriculum, Everyday Math has been replaced Teachers: • Thank you for all the hard work on Family Night, great success • Excited to see the kids so engaged in the volunteer opportunities • Excellence in Education winner is Doug McDermitt • New counselor will be Arlene Petty Family Night -- March 8th • Kindle Fire was a big hit (641 raffle tickets) • Silent Auction went well. Baskets were all picked up. Grand Total: Baskets: $5167 Spirit Wear • Cups sold out: $160 • Suggested items: locker mirrors, cups, a few other items for cash and carry at open house. • Suggested partnering with “Hole in the Wall” (HS store) to get a better discount • Could have school store once or twice a month. • Could mail advertisement with report cards
• Made $6,300 at Family Night • T. Cramer would like to see project materials subsidized for students that can’t afford extra items. Mr. Miller suggested communicating with teacher beforehand to see if school has items that can be used. • Through discussion, discovered School Counselor will have fund to support these children. PTO will increase this amount for future years. • For Nancy Nichols husband passing, PTO donation of $50 to Camp Kern • In memory of Chaya Hafen, former Watts Student, card to family, plaque on bench that student council is purchasing. Mr. Miller will work through Mrs. Creek to facilitate this. Vice President’s Report • Any more volunteer needs for the rest of the year? May have to help with Jazz on the Lawn. Partners in Education • Doing well, $200 over expected
