Tower Heights students are participating in an ongoing character education program of “Building a Safe and Caring Community.” Pictured are Greg Crabtree and Steve Whisenhunt from T.J.’s Place of Hope who spoke to 8th graders about recognizing and responding to signs of depression, substance abuse, self-injury, and suicidal ideation in oneself and others. The 8th Grade Diversity Leadership Team presented “Bullying 101,” a series of skits and small group activities for 6th graders; while all 7th graders viewed and discussed “The Bully’s Mark,” a documentary filmed by a graduate student who returns to the middle school where she was bullied. Tower Heights 8th graders Matthew Lewis (left) and Jeromy Raczak are installing self-made locker shelf units that will add two shelves inside a student’s school locker, “designed to help students with their organizational skills,” according to TH Social Studies teacher and originator of the project Brian Hinders. More than 300 TH students have already received the double shelves consisting of four wood support slats held in place with machine screws and nuts, and plywood shelves. Supported with PTO donations, the project is now being taken on by the other TH social studies teachers with the ultimate goal being a double shelf unit in each of the school’s 600+ lockers.
