Mrs. O'Grady's Class Newsletter

October 2010

Welcome to our first newsletter! I know it has been a long time coming and I apologize for that. We have been so busy in our classroom learning new things and having fun! Your children are so much fun to work with! They amaze us everyday!

We started out the year making new friends and getting to know each other. We drew pictures of our selves for an alphabet book that will be coming home in the Traveling Bag beginning next week. The Traveling Bag is a bag that has a book to share with your family, usually one we have made together as a class. The book will come home with your child and you are welcome to read it together and talk about it. Have your child tell you as much about as he/she can. There are comment sheets in the bag that you can fill out or not fill out. That is up to you. I do understand how hectic evenings are and if you do not have time to review the book or fill out the comment sheet, I will understand. Just, please, send back the bag so other families can enjoy it.

We are beginning to talk about water and what ways we can enjoy water. Thank you so much for returning the water surveys regarding your child's water activities this summer. We had fun graphing their water activities. We did an experiment with water to determine which containers hold water and which do not. We used a funnel, a spoon, a bowl, a paper bag, a strainer, and a cup. We made predictions about which ones would hold water and which ones would not before we tested them. Then we drew pictures in a Water Discover book about which items would hold water and which would not. Mostly they just liked playing in the water.

When the weather was warm, (ok, ok, HOT!) we had water tables outside for the children to explore. We provided cups, spoons, paint brushes, and sponges for them to explore and play with. They had a blast throwing the sponges against the brick wall outside and watching them stick to the wall! They also LOVED “painting” the wall with the paintbrush! We also explored water colors with spray bottles. We put watered down colors in a spray bottle and they stood at the easel and sprayed the paper. The designs they came up with were beautiful and they had so much fun, we spray painted again, only inside this time. We grated chalk with a cheese grater into a tub of water and had the children run their black construction paper through the chalk for some interesting designs. Another art day, we used simple water color paints and a paintbrush on paper. Anytime we paint, the children have a blast! Last week we used acrylic paint and dipped fall cookie cutters into the paint and stamped them on the paper. Art has been so much fun!

We had a great time on our field trip to Grant Nature Center!  For some, the highlight of the trip was riding the bus!  We hiked through the woods, stepped from stone to stone in the stream, laid down in the prairie grass and pretended to be deers hiding, and looked at all the beautiful fall colors of the trees.  THANKS SO MUCH  to Mrs. Job and Carter and Mrs. Larson in the AM and Mr. and Mrs. Combs and Samuel and Mrs. Harless in the PM for coming along with us.  Also a HUGE thanks to Miss Rosie for being our tour guide and teaching us so much about Grant Nature!  We really appreciate it!

We are working with all the children on being independent. We encourage them to put on/take off their own coats, take care of their book bags, wash their hands, pour their own drinks, walk on their own with supervision, and clean up after snack. While I realize that again, your time is sometimes short, please consider allowing your child to do more things for himself. Their sense of accomplishment is so great when they “do it myself!” And they really CAN do it themselves!

As the weather grows cooler and we have to start bundling up please mark all of your child's things with their name or a the very least their initials. We have many coats that look the same and if they are placed on the wrong hooks, they are mixed up and the wrong coat goes home.

We are singing new fall songs which should have come home in your child's backpack this week. If you did not get a copy of songs, let me know and I will send you another copy.
