Room 16 News

Hello PVN families! I’m Mrs. Jacobs and I teach first grade in Room 16 in the Raspberry Neighborhood! I am so excited to be your child’s teacher this year. This year we will meet new friends, learn exciting things, and have lots of fun together! This will be our class news website that I will be updating throughout the year with classroom information, important dates, pictures, and videos!

If you ever have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at school (438-6062) or by e-mail (sarah.jacobs@centerville.k12.oh.us). I look forward to working with your family this year!

What's Happening in Room 16?

Hello Families!

Hello Room 16 Families!  As hard as it is to leave my little ones, I am glad to be back with the students and back at PVN!  Thank you to Nikki Clark for doing a great job while I was gone!  When I returned last week, the kids were so excited to 'teach me' what they have learned!  They are continuing to make great progress and are becoming such great readers and writers!

Recently, a student brought in some tadpoles to observe!  We have had to do some research to learn about caring for tadpoles and the life cycle of a frog.  We also had a neighborhood meeting when a bookbag was discovered near an empty garden box!  We found field guides about plants and animals inside and learned that the bookbag belonged to Mrs. Paice, a naturalist from Grant Nature.  We wrote a letter to her asking her for help--as we now want to plant in the garden box to try to attract insects and animals.  Since we are doing all of this research, we are starting to learn more about nonfiction as readers and writers!

We read several books last week about Earth Day and learned about how we can each do our part to care for the Earth!  This is part of being a good citizen, which is one of the words 'Ollie the Otter' taught us early in the school year.  Since 100% of PVN earned a ribbon from Ollie, we are having a celebration tomorrow (Thursday) at 1:00!  We are asking children to please wear their Respect, Responsibility, or Citizenship ribbon to school on Thursday.  Children can also wear yellow, blue, or red if they don't have their ribbon.

Finally, we hope you can join us Friday for the Volunteer Tea!  We have had such wonderful parent volunteers this year!  Thank you for all you do for us!

    Learning together,

    Sarah Jacobs

Our Weirdo Word Challenge

Thursday, October 28, 2010
(video)

As you have seen, Room 16 learns hard to spell sight words by chanting or singing the spellings.  This year we have already learned a lot of words...and we are using them correctly in our writing (which is the most challenging part).  Here is our 'Weirdo Word Challenge' where the students had to try to do all of the words off of the word wall!  You can make your own challenge at home, asking your child to spell/sing these words!  :) Read More

The Raspberry Neighborhood Performs...

At the Fall Harvest Sing Along, the Raspberry Neighborhood performed...There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves!  Several children helped by building a scarecrow as we sang about the old lady swallowing a pumpkin, a pole, a shirt, pants, a rope, hay, and some leaves!  Read More

How to Make Play Dough

Tuesday, October 19, 2010
(video)

Room 16 has been reading and writing 'How To' books!  We have practiced sequencing the steps and telling how to do something in detail.  Some books the kids have written are...How to Make Pizza, How to Make Salad, How to Play Soccer, and How to Take Care of a Dog!  Our class went to the cooking classroom and we followed a recipe step by step to make homemade play dough!  Mrs. Martin helped us turn our steps into a video to not only tell, but show someone how to make play dough!  Now we are using the play dough to stamp our sight words during Word Work time!  We hope you enjoy the video!  Read More
