DRISCOLL GRANDPARENTS AND VETERANS HONORED

Students and staff at Driscoll Elementary honored their grandparents and service members, both active and retired, during their annual 3rd Grade Veterans Program on November 25. The Driscoll chorus, under the direction of music teacher Jennifer Eyink, led the assembled students, staff, and guests in the singing of the Star Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful, in addition to the chorus singing the theme song for each of the nation’s five military branches of service. CENTERVILLE SCHOOLS HOST AUTHOR LESTER LAMINACK

Award-winning children's author and acclaimed educator Lester Laminack met with Centerville parents at a 7 pm open meeting about how to support children as readers and writers at home. During the day he visited with students (at Driscoll, shown above) and staff, sharing tips about how to become an effective writer, including the value of a writing notebook, and for staff how to embed the Common Core State Standards into oral storytelling. DRISCOLL’S GRANDPARENTS AND VETERANS OVERFLOW THE GYMNASIUM

After Driscoll second graders sang “America, I Hear You Singing” to open the school’s 3rd Grade Veterans Day Assembly a United States Air Force Color Guard from Wright Patterson Air Force Base Posted the Colors, followed by third graders leading an overflow crowd of students, staff, and grandparents in the Pledge of Allegiance. Other patriotic music was sung by the 2nd and 3rd graders, including “The Star Spangled Banner.” Read More

SIDEWALK CHALK ARTIST ENCHANTS DRISCOLL SECOND GRADERS

Chalk artist and illustrator David Zinn’s visit to Centerville elementary schools confirmed that kids love to draw on surfaces normally reserved for other functions. Supported by Masterworks, a local art appreciation effort, Zinn’s visit showcased his talent of drawing on sidewalks or walls using regular sidewalk chalk. Here, the artist is explaining his techniques to Driscoll second graders as he draws “Dash,” the school’s mascot on the wall next to the main front doors. Read More

3RD GRADERS ASSIST MAYOR ON ARBOR DAY

Elementary principals and selected 3rd grade students joined the City of Centerville and the Centerville City Beautiful Commission in the celebration of this year’s Arbor Day with a Tree Planting Ceremony at Benham’s Grove. After opening comments by Mayor Mark Kingseed the thirteen students assisted in the planting of nine trees around the North Main Street property. Alpha Club donates blankets

Alpha Club was busy in January making 7 fleece, tie blankets for the homeless. The club was able to buy the fleece with proceeds from their December Smoothie Sale. All 7 blankets were completed at their January meeting with the hardworking hands of its 21 members. The blankets went to an outreach program organized through an area church. Read More

COSI on Wheels visits with the Incredible Human Machine

COSI on Wheels visited Driscoll on January 16th with the Incredible Human Machine program.  Students attended an assembly where they examined the importance of the various body systems, learned how food fuels the body, and identified that exercise keeps the body strong.  Students then came back to the gym with their class to explore hands-on stations and further learn about their bodies and keeping them healthy.  Students put together a body puzzle, built a meal, completed an experiment to discover starch in foods, found their pulse, learned about the harmful effects of high fat foods and participated in various other activities.  This awesome event was made possible through the support of our PTO and 16 fantastic parent volunteers! Driscoll Holds GeoBee

Driscoll’s fourth and fifth grade students competed in the National Geographic Bee Contest. Each student, in his/her homeroom was quizzed over ten rounds of questions. Our ten finalists were the following: Hayden, Michael, Gabriel, Chloe, Kenny, Emma, Patrick, Jonah and Jackson. Read More
